Kara Wang is a Chinese-American Actress and Producer. She is well-known for her role as Alice in the American television series Jane the Virgin and as Lt. Callie ‘Halo’ Bassett in Top Gun: Maverick.

In 2022, she starred in the Hallmark movie Christmas at the Golden Dragon. The movie was directed by David I. Strasser and written by Melynda Bissmeyer and Emily Ting. The movie is about a Midwestern Chinese restaurant announcing that it’s closing right before Christmas. The announcement prompts their clientele to re-examine their relationships in a series of interconnected stories during the busiest week of the year. The co-stars of the movie are Barbara Niven, Sara Canning, Antonio Cupo, and Genevieve Beuchner.

Wang was born on December 6, 1989, in Los Angeles, California, United States. She has an older brother. She attended Saratoga High School in California. Later, she graduated with a BA degree in theatre from the University of California in Irvine. After she graduated from college, she signed a global deal with a talent agency while residing in Hong Kong and Beijing from 2010 to 2015. During that period, she appeared in over 20 Chinese television and film productions.

Career

She started her acting career as a child actress. She started performing on stage when she was just 6 years old. Throughout her elementary, middle, and high school, she was involved in choir and theatre. She signed with her first agent when she was 15 years old. In 2011, she played the role of Kathy in the movie Megan Is Missing. She also voiced in Mickey Mouse in 2013.

Wang played the role of Alice in Jane the Virgin in 2014. She played the role of Chine Operator in Merry Xmas, Lisa in Goliath, Lian Hua in Poppies, June Zhang in The Rookie, Sumi in Good Trouble, Asha in The Calm Beyond, Steph Bennett in Off-Broadway,  Lt. Callie ‘Halo’ Bassett in Top Gun: Maverick. a naval flight officer training on the F/A-18F Super Hornet.

She is selected to return and train as a candidate for a secret mission to destroy a uranium enrichment facility. At the end of the training, she is not one of the candidates selected to partake in the operation. She also played the role of Shannon in Dinner Party, and Romy Chen in Christmas at the Golden Dragon. She appeared in the movie Caught in the Web directed by the renowned Chinese director Chen Kaige.
