Joseph Cannata was born on July 21, 1983, in Toronto, Canada. He studied communication and film at Wilfrid Laurier University for two years. During this time, he became interested in building a career in entertainment.

Instead of continuing with university, Joseph decided to explore acting. He invested his limited savings in acting classes and professional headshots. With guidance from his agent, he began getting opportunities in modeling and commercial work.

Before becoming widely known as an actor, Joseph built a successful career as a model. He worked on print campaigns and commercials for well-known companies, including Air Canada, Harry Rosen, Listerine, Gillette, Adidas, Lexus, and Canon. His modeling work also included numerous romance-novel book covers.

His modeling experience helped him develop confidence in front of the camera and eventually opened the door to film and television acting.
