He studied at Oxford University in England for two semesters. He finished his thesis on James Joyce’s Ulysses the following summer after travelling back to Europe on a research fellowship to study at Oxford and Trinity College, Dublin.
Gonzalez had stumbled into acting at Stanford after taking an elective in improvisational theatre and starting to participate in student theatre. He was asked to perform in Gas, a one-man theatrical production by Maria Irene Fornés. He was inspired to become a professional actor by actress and Stanford lecturer Alma Martinez.

Gonzalez chose to pursue acting after earning a degree from Stanford in 1998, and with Martinez’s assistance, he became involved in the San Francisco theatre scene.
He was once advised to go by “Nicholas Edward” and use his middle name Edward to hide his nationality, but he rejected. Gonzalez relocated to Los Angeles in 1998, where he was cast in little roles in shows including NBC’s One World and ABC’s Dharma and Greg.
The Lifetime television film My Little Assassin, starring Joe Mantegna and Gabrielle Anwar, featured Gonzalez next as Fidel Castro’s kid. His first significant exposure came from his part as Andy, the homosexual yuppie on MTV’s Undressed, in which he featured for six episodes.
In 2000, Gonzalez completed the production of two movies. The first, Scenes of the Crime, which featured Jeff Bridges, Jon Abrahams, and Noah Wyle, had its world debut at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. Dominique Forma served as the director.
The second movie, called Spun, was an independent production with Mena Suvari, Mickey Rourke, Brittany Murphy, and John Leguizamo in the lead roles. The 2003 Sundance Film Festival included it.
Gonzalez also earned the main role in Resurrection Blvd., a Showtime original series that debuted on June 26, 2000. Gonzalez portrayed boxer Alex Santiago, a pre-med student who left school to pursue a career in boxing. After the film’s rapid popularity, the network decided to make it a regular weekly series.
