Terri Lynn Sauson (born August 5, 1968) is a Canadian country music singer who has achieved success in both Canada and the United States. In 1995, she signed with Mercury Records and released her self-titled debut. It, as well as its two sequels, 1996’s Just the Same and 1998’s How I Feel, were certified platinum in both nations and yielded multiple Top Ten country songs.

Her fourth album, Fearless, was certified gold in Canada but was not as successful in the United States, yielding no Top 10 songs. With “I Just Wanna Be Mad” and “I Wanna Do It All,” Pain to Kill from 2003 recovered her chart momentum in the United States, while a greatest hits album from 2004 provided the Number One “Girls Lie Too.” Her last releases for Mercury were a non-album single, “The World Needs a Drink,” and the 2005 album Life Goes On, before she signed with BNA Records in 2007. She released the songs “Dirty Girl” and “In My Next Life” while there. Despite the fact that the latter reached number one in Canada, she has yet to release an album for BNA.

Clark’s albums have produced almost twenty songs, including six Number One hits. “If I Were You,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me,” “Emotional Girl,” and “In My Next Life” all topped the country charts in Canada (the first three also charted in the United States), “Girls Lie Too” charted just in the United States, and “You’re Easy on the Eyes” charted in both countries.

Early Life

Terri Lynn Sauson was born on August 5, 1968, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Her family subsequently relocated to Medicine Hat, Alberta, where she grew up. She is the youngest of four siblings, with a younger brother, Peter, an elder sister, Kim, and a younger sister, Tina. Ray and Betty Gauthier, Clark’s grandparents, were both well-known Canadian country performers who opened for stars such as George Jones and Johnny Cash.

Linda Clark, Clark’s mother, was a member of the Canadian folk scene. Terri’s parents split while she was a child, and her mother remarried, with Terri adopting her stepfather’s surname. Clark had come to enjoy country music by high school and worked at a local Chinese restaurant to earn money for a relocation to Nashville, Tennessee.

She went to Nashville after graduating from Crescent Heights High School in 1987, where she got her start performing at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, a honky-tonk bar across the alley from Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium. Country music execs were mostly disinterested in classic country at the time, but record producer and vocalist Keith Stegall advised and encouraged Clark not to lose up. Stegall joined PolyGram/Mercury Records in Nashville in 1994 and immediately signed Clark to a record contract.

Career:

Clark’s big break arrived in 1994. She got an audition with Mercury Records, and after seeing her perform live, the label’s president signed her. Terri Clark, her debut album, was released the following year and was an instant success. The album was certified platinum and produced Top Ten hits such as “Better Things to Do,” “When Boy Meets Girl,” and “If I Were You,” which became Clark’s first Canadian number one.

In 1995, Billboard magazine named her the Top New Female Country Artist. She was nominated for the Horizon Award and the Academy of Country Music’s Best New Female Vocalist Award in 1996. In Canada, she was named Album of the Year and Single of the Year at the Canadian Country Music Awards.

Just the Same, her sophomore album, was released in 1996, followed by How I Feel in 1998. Clark’s first number one single in the United States was “You’re Easy on the Eyes” by How I Feel. The single also reached number one in Canada. Clark opened for Reba McEntire and Brooks & Dunn on their 1998 tour to promote the album. Her fourth studio album, Fearless, was released in 2000. Clark’s previous albums had a more acoustic feel, thanks to a new producer and co-writers. For the album, she also wrote more personal songs.

Clark released Pain to Kill in 2003, immediately followed by the single “I Just Wanna Be Mad.” Clark’s highest-ever Billboard Hot 100 position is No. 27, achieved with the single. She was asked to join the Grand Ole Opry following a performance there in 2004, and she is the only female Canadian member to this day. Her first Greatest Hits CD was published shortly after her admission. The album’s only hit, “Girls Lie Too,” earned her first number one single in the United States since “You’re Easy on the Eyes” in 1998.

Life Continues was published in 2005. She signed with BNA Records, a part of Sony Music Entertainment, in 2006 and began work on her second album, My Next Life. Despite the fact that two of the album’s singles were released, the album’s release was repeatedly delayed, causing Clark to part ways with the label in 2008. Her seventh studio album, The Long Way Home, was published in 2009 on her own label, BareTrack Records.

Roots and Wings was released in 2011. Clark wrote “Smile” when her mother died from cancer after a lengthy fight. Classic was published in 2012, and Some Songs was released in 2014. Clark’s own label and Universal Music Canada released the album. Clark is still performing and touring around the nation today. She also co-hosts Nash FM’s America’s Morning Show with Blair Garner and Chuck Wicks.
