She attended Oxon Hill High School in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Then she attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where she wanted to study electrical engineering but then transferred to Howard University to study Drama.
To pay for college, she worked at The Pentagon as a secretary and in the evenings, she worked as a singing and dancing waitress on the dinner cruise ship, The Spirit of Washington.
