As Michael Dorsey in the lead role of Tootsie on stage, Fontana, a two-time Tony Award nominee and three-time Drama Desk Award nominee, won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, and Outer Critics Circle Award. Santino Fontana Early Life
Fontana’s parents, Sharon Marie Fontana (born 1951) and Ernest John Fontana, welcomed him into the world on March 21, 1982, in Stockton, California (born 1948). His father is agronomic, while his mother teaches kindergarten. He only has a sister. He has a half-Italian, a quarter-Portuguese, and quarter-Spanish ancestry. Richland High School in Richland, Washington is where Fontana received her diploma.
In his childhood, Fontana attended the Academy of Children’s Theatre in Richland, Washington, where he learned the arts. At the Interlochen Arts Camp at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, he studied theatre arts as a teenager. He earned his BFA in acting from the University of Minnesota’s Guthrie Theater.
Santino Fontana Career
Fontana co-wrote the musical comedy Perfect Harmony in 2005 as a member of the Essentials, and he created the character of Philip Fellowes V. He performed the Shakespearean classic as Hamlet at The Guthrie Theatre in 2006 before heading to New York City to play Matt in the Off-Broadway version of The Fantasticks. In 2007, he made his Broadway debut in Sunday in the Park with George. From October 1, 2008, until July 4, 2009, Fontana played Tony in the Broadway version of Billy Elliot.
For his performance in Brighton Beach Memoirs, he received the 2010 Drama Desk Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He played the role of Prince Topher on Broadway in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. In the 2013 film Frozen from the Walt Disney Animation Studios, he gave the voice of Prince Hans.
Fontana made history by being the first guest performer to join the Tabernacle Choir on Temple Square three times in a single year, where he also got to know the Sesame Street cast. In the same year, Fontana joined the cast of the CW romantic musical drama-drama Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. After completing his one-year deal with the CW, Fontana stated on November 11, 2016, that he will be departing the TV show.
In the stage musical adaption of the movie Tootsie, which had its world debut in Chicago at the Cadillac Palace Theatre from September 11 to October 14, 2018, he played Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels. On Broadway, the show debuted on April 23, 2019, and it closed on January 5, 2020. Scott Ellis oversaw the direction, David Yazbek wrote the music and lyrics, and Robert Horn wrote the book. For the show, Fontana received the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Together with actress Krysta Rodriguez, Fontana co-starred in the Hallmark Channel movie Just One Kiss in 2022.
