Rich Brian is a rapper, record producer, and songwriter from Indonesia. He is still in his teens, yet he is regarded as one of the country’s most promising adolescent music heroes. He ascended to prominence in 2016 with the release of his first hit, ‘Dat $tick.’ The ‘Recording Industry Association of America’ subsequently certified the song “gold” (RIAA). Rich Brian Imanuel was born on September 3, 1999, in Jakarta, Indonesia. His father was an attorney. They also owned and operated a family restaurant. His parents had Chinese ancestors. Rich was raised with three other siblings. Despite having enough money, the family opted to live in a less than desirable neighbourhood. This prompted his parents to keep Rich as isolated from the outer world as possible. As a consequence, he spent the most of his time in front of a computer or television.

Rich was mostly homeschooled and got no official schooling. In his spare time, he assisted his parents in running their family restaurant. He had plenty of opportunity to explore other topics since he was homeschooled, such as music and the internet. He once wanted to solve a ‘Rubik’s Cube,’ and quickly recognised that he could do it with the aid of the internet. During this time, he logged onto his father’s computer and found a whole new universe.

He grew hooked to ‘YouTube’ and ‘Twitter’ quickly. He launched his ‘YouTube’ channel when he was 11 years old, intending to let himself be viewed by a big number of people. To establish a following base, he copied the American model of ‘YouTube’ and created several dark-comedy routines. His videos gradually gained popularity and finally became viral.

Rich went to a more fascinating site, ‘Vine,’ at the age of 15, and became similarly successful there. Brian began releasing music videos of his rap tracks to the internet under the screen name “Rich Chigga” in July 2015. ‘Living the Dream’ was his first YouTube hit. DJ Smokey created the tune, which drew a lot of attention. He was one of the few Indonesian rappers who could compose raps in perfect English, and in a short period of time, it was difficult to tell him apart from American rappers.

His greatest break came in February 2016, when he released his tune ‘Dat $tick’ to YouTube. The song was initially a sluggish hit, but it ultimately gained traction. The song transcended national boundaries and made its way to the United States. There, a few rappers and “YouTubers” decided to make response videos for the song, which helped it gain popularity. Brian received the ‘Breakthrough Artist of the Year’ award at the ‘Indonesian Choice Awards’ in May 2017. Around the same time, Brian revealed in an interview that he was working on his first album, which was being totally produced in Los Angeles. Brian released the track ‘Glow Like Dat’ on ’88Rising’s channel on August 15, 2017. In the same month, he revealed that he would be heading on a two-month American tour. Brian released the singles ‘Chaos’ and ‘Crisis’ before the end of the year. The latter was recorded in partnership with well-known American rapper 21 Savage.

Brian stated on his ‘Twitter’ account in December 2017 that his first album, ‘Amen,’ will be released in February 2018. Brian changed his stage name to “Brian” in January 2018. As he was producing his first album, he took the initiative to have his fans consider him more seriously. His stage name was then changed to “Rich Brian.” On February 2, the album ‘Amen’ was released and was an immediate hit. Rich became the first Asian artist to top the ‘iTunes Hip Hop’ list with the album’s release and popularity.
