Bishop was born in the English town of Swindon. When he was six months old, his parents moved to Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, where they made their home. His father was a former diplomat and Australian Army officer. Bishop studied at Canberra’s Radford College. Bishop earned a degree in performing arts (acting) from Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1996, and since 1997, he has regularly taught film acting there. He was an ambassador for Australia Day in 2006.
