He made his professional acting debut in the movie, The Longshots in the year of 2008, and later he appeared in the movies like Prom in the year of 2011 and in Whiplash in the year of 2014, and Straight Outta Compton in the year of 2015.
On TV he has a recurring role on Awkward, a comedy-drama series from the year 2014 to 2015. From the year 2016, he starred in the drama series Queen Sugar and for which he acquired attention and three consecutive NAACP Image Award nominations, and was also cast in the hit movie Girls Trip.
