Early Life
Dieuson Octave Black was born on June 11, 1997, in Pompano Beach, Florida, to Haitian immigrant parents. Kodak was reared by a single mother after his father abandoned the household shortly after his birth. Soon after his father departed, Kodak and his mother moved to Golden Acres, a local housing society where many Haitian immigrants also resided. The neighbourhood was not perfect by any means, and Octave ultimately became entangled with the area’s anti-social elements. He began selling narcotics and engaging in other minor crimes at a young age.
He had a bad attendance record and was uninterested in academics. In addition, he got into countless confrontations at school, which resulted in his expulsion on several occasions.
Kodak was uninterested in school and aspired to be a rapper. He studied various books to improve his command of the English language. He had already begun rapping when he was 12 years old. Octave subsequently revealed that while he was suffering, he had just two options: sell drugs at gunpoint or rap.
Kodak began visiting additional recording studios and discovered that he loved them. He did not, however, abandon his illegal activities and was jailed on many occasions. He was arrested when he was 15 years old on a major offence.
All of his dreams of becoming a rapper seemed to be dashed, until one of his producers came to his rescue. He saw the boy’s potential and saw him as a valuable asset to him. This was a watershed moment in Octave’s career.

Career
He adopted the stage name “J-Black” and began to pursue a rap career. He joined a local small-time rap group called ‘Brutal Youngnz’ shortly after becoming 12 years old. When his intentions with the band fell through, he joined another band called ‘The Kolyons.’ ‘Project Baby,’ Kodak’s first mixtape, was released in December 2013. It fared well in the local nightclubs and earned Kodak a lot of attention.
He released two additional mixtapes during the following two years, ‘Heart of the Projects’ and ‘Institution.’ Although his music was well received locally, he had yet to achieve global recognition. Drake, the renowned rapper, danced to one of Kodak’s tracks, ‘Skrt,’ in October 2015. This was a pivotal event in Kodak’s career. Following this, the amount of ‘Google’ searches for his song skyrocketed, exposing him to national prominence.
‘Atlantic Records’ sought to capitalise on Kodak’s rising star and offered him a deal. Kodak launched the ‘Parental Advisory Tour’ in May 2016. However, due to personal obligations, he was unable to attend the event. French Montana was one of the first major rappers to work with Kodak, and the first track from that collaboration, named ‘Lockjaw,’ was released in May 2016. The song charted on numerous hip-hop and R&B radio stations.
His solo track ‘Skrt’ was included on numerous R&B and hip-hop charts in August 2016. He capitalised on his rapidly expanding reputation by releasing his fourth mixtape, ‘Lil B.I.G. Pac,’ a few months later. ‘Atlantic Records’ published the mixtape. It was his first album to chart on the ‘Billboard’ charts. ‘XXL’ magazine named him to their ‘2016 Freshman Class.’
However, the success was tainted by a social media incident. A video on social media showed him rapping about a black lady. The lyrics claimed that she was not as attractive as a white lady. Kodak released a single called ‘Tunnel Vision’ in early 2017. The song topped many American music charts. It debuted at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number six. This was a major accomplishment because Kodak was a relatively young artist at the time.
Kodak launched his first studio album, ‘Painting Pictures,’ in March 2017, and it became one of his most successful efforts to date. The album reached at number three on the Billboard 200 list. Kodak released ‘Project Baby 2,’ the sequel to his mixtape ‘Project Baby,’ in August 2017. One of the album’s songs, ‘Codeine Dreaming,’ was especially successful, peaking at the 52nd slot on the ‘Billboard Hot 100’ list. Kodak released another mixtape, ‘Heartbreak Kodak,’ on Valentine’s Day 2018, which was a huge hit.
