He was born on 9 December 1987 in Westminster, London, England to poet Dominic Sasse and Mary Rosalind Macauley. His mother was a social worker and his father was a photographer. He grew up in the countryside of West Sussex and attended the Hurstpierpoint College. When Joshua was five years old, his father passed away on PIA Flight 268 while en route to Kathmandu. After his mother remarried, Joshua was transferred to Shrewsbury School, where he fell in love with acting.
