Dean Brody (born August 12, 1975) is a Canadian country music musician who has won 16 CCMA Awards and two JUNO Awards. Brody was signed to Broken Bow Records in 2008 and made his debut later that year with the track “Brothers.” This song, a Top 40 country smash in the United States, was the first single off his self-titled debut album, released in 2009 and produced by Matt Rovey.

Brody got signed to Open Road Recordings in 2010 and released his second album, Trail in Life. Dirt, his third album, was released in 2012, winning him the 2012 CCMA Album of the Year award as well as a 2013 Juno nomination for Country Album of the Year. Brody also received the CCMA Male Artist of the Year award in 2012 and 2013. Crop Circles, Brody’s fourth album, was released in 2013. Gypsy Road, Brody’s fifth album, was released in 2015.

Brody’s sixth studio album, Beautiful Freakshow, was released in 2016, and he went on to win three CCMA Awards in 2017, including Fan’s Choice, Songwriter of the Year, and Top-Selling Canadian Single of the Year for “Bush Party.” Brody broke the record for the most played song on Canadian country radio in a single week in 2020 with “Canadian Summer.” He is the first Canadian country musician to have headlined Toronto’s Budweiser Stage for six years in a row.

Early Life

Dean Brody was born in Smithers, British Columbia, and grew up in Jaffray. Brody worked at a sawmill as a child and enjoyed playing the guitar in his leisure time. He relocated to Nashville, Tennessee in 2004 to pursue his musical career. Despite finding a songwriting deal, the expiry of his US work visa compelled him to return to Canada.

He eventually returned to Nashville on the advice of producer Keith Stegall, who assisted him in signing with Broken Bow Records in 2008. Late that year, Brody released his first song, “Brothers.” Brody was wounded in a waterskiing accident on the Potomac River shortly before the film’s debut and required major reconstructive surgery.

From 2010 until 2017, Brody resided in Windsor, Nova Scotia, and Chester, Nova Scotia. He will release his own beer, “Hucklejack Canadian Lager,” in 2020. Since the early 2010s, Brody has led the “Dean Brody Foundation,” which supports worldwide projects.

Career

Brody’s self-titled first album was published on April 28, 2009, by the indie label Broken Bow Records in the United States. The album debuted at number 32 on the Billboard Top Country Albums list in the United States, and it was released in Canada on May 12, 2009. “Brothers” peaked at number 26 in the United States. In Canada, “Dirt Road Scholar” and “Undone” were released, while “Gravity” was published in the United States.

“Wildflower,” the first single from Brody’s second album, was released in April 2010. In July 2010, a second single, “Roll That Barrel Out,” was released. Trail in Life was released in August 2010 by Open Road Recordings. Other hits were “People Know You by Your First Name,” “Little Yellow Blanket,” and the title tune.

Dirt, Brody’s third studio album, was released on April 24, 2012 by Open Road Recordings. Its debut track, “Canadian Girls,” became Brody’s first Canadian Hot 100 top 40 hit and his first certified gold digital record. Brody’s first headlining Dirt Tour throughout Canada sold out in 2012.

Crop Circles, Brody’s fourth studio album, was released on November 5, 2013. On August 19, the lead single, “Bounty,” was released. The title tune was released in December 2013, “Another Man’s Gold” in April 2014, and “Mountain Man” in September 2014.

Gypsy Road, Brody’s fifth studio album, was released on April 21, 2015. On February 9, the first single, “Upside Down,” was released. The album’s second song, “Bring Down the House,” was released to Canadian country radio on May 25, 2015. On October 23, 2015, the album’s third song, “Love Would Be Enough,” was released to Canadian country radio.

The fourth song from the album, “Monterey,” was released to Canadian country radio in March 2016. Beautiful Freakshow, Brody’s sixth studio album, was released on October 21, 2016. “Bush Party,” the album’s debut track, was released to Canadian country radio in 2016.

Brody released the EP Black Sheep on April 26, 2019, which included four songs, “Good Goodbye,” “Dose of Country,” platinum-certified “Whiskey in a Teacup,” and “Black Sheep,” all of which scored in the top 10 of the Canadian Country charts. He co-headlined a Canadian tour with fellow country star Dallas Smith.

Brody released the track “Can’t Help Myself” with The Reklaws on his own label, Scurvy Dog Music, in February 2020. The song peaked at number one on Billboard Canada’s Country chart and number 49 on the Canadian Hot 100. With 1782 spins, it became the most played song in Canadian country radio history in a single week on the Nielsen BDS charts.

Brody’s song “Canadian Summer” was released in June 2020. It would be his second straight No. 1 at Canadian Country radio, and his fifth overall, beating the previous record established by “Can’t Help Myself.” Boys, Brody’s seventh studio album, will be released on November 18, 2020.
