Her mother was Carolyn London who worked as a medical photographer whereas her father Donald Banks, is a computer consultant. Her brother Devin Banks is five years older than her. When Tyra was six years old her parents were divorced in the year of 1979.

She was in the John Burroughs Middle School and got graduated in the year of 1991 from Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles. She has completed a nine-week course in the Harvard University’s Owner/President Management non-degree extension program in the Feb of 2012.
