The American member of the British royal family and former actress known as Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was born Rachel Meghan Markle on August 4, 1981. She is the spouse of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, King Charles III youngest son.

Meghan was reared in Los Angeles, California, where she was born. At Northwestern University, she started her acting career; her last and most notable on-screen performance was as Rachel Zane for seven seasons (2011–2018) in the American TV legal drama Suits.

She also established a presence on social media. This includes the lifestyle blog The Tig (2014–2017), where she acquired notoriety for her sense of style and inspired the development and launch of two clothing lines in 2015–2016. Meghan became active in charitable activities at The Tig that was mostly concerned with social justice and women’s problems. From 2011 until 2014, she was married to American film producer Trevor Engelson.

After marrying Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan gave up acting and took the title of Duchess of Sussex. Archie and Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor are their two children. The pair stopped serving as working royals in January 2020, and they afterwards relocated to California.

Rachel Thomas Markle Sr., an Emmy Award-winning television lighting director and director of photography, and Doria Ragland, a make-up artist, welcomed Meghan Markle into the world on August 4, 1981, at West Park Hospital in Canoga Park, Los Angeles, California.

When questioned about her ethnicity, she often identifies as mixed race “My mother is African American, and my father is white. I am a mixed-race person.” When she was two years old, her parents split and then remarried four years later.

She and her mother have a tight bond. Thomas Markle Sr. served as the director of photography and lighting for Married… with Children and General Hospital, and as a little girl, Meghan sometimes visited the Married… with Children set. Samantha Markle and Thomas Markle Jr., her paternal half-siblings, and her father have remained distant from her.

Markle attended Hollywood Little Red Schoolhouse as a child growing up in Los Angeles. She was raised by both of her parents until she was nine years old, at which point her father took over while her mother focused on her work. She and her classmates sent a letter to Procter & Gamble when she was 11 years old requesting that the company gender-neutralize a television advertisement for dishwashing soap.

Despite having attended the all-girls Catholic Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles while growing up, she was reared as a Protestant. She had jobs as a waitress and nanny after beginning her working career as a teenager at a neighbourhood frozen yoghurt restaurant. Additionally, she helped at a Skid Row soup kitchen in Los Angeles.

She was accepted to Northwestern University (NU), located in Evanston, Illinois, in 1999, and joined the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma there. Markle assisted the Glass Slipper Project as a volunteer along with other Kappa Kappa Gamma members. With the aid of her uncle Michael Markle, she was able to gain a position as a junior press officer at the American embassy in Buenos Aires after finishing her junior year, and she thought about a future in politics.

Being “ethnically ambiguous” meant Markle struggled to get jobs early in her career because “I wasn’t black enough for the black roles and I wasn’t white enough for the white ones.” She taught bookbinding and worked as a freelance calligrapher to support herself in performing gigs. Her father was the lighting director for the daytime soap opera General Hospital, which included her first on-screen debut in a minor nursing role.

Markle appeared in brief cameo appearances in the television programs CSI: NY, The War at Home (2006), and Century City (2004). (2006). She misled the casting directors about her SAG-AFTRA membership while applying for her part in Century City, but the Taft-Hartley Act required the employers to assist her in joining the union once she was cast.
