Early Life
Owen Barney, who was born and raised in Toronto but can still dive deep into a country feeling, is being recognised as an up-and-comer on the Canadian country music scene. The 19-year-old singer-songwriter recently released No Road Too Long, his second EP, which includes four songs that showcase his talent, potential, and personality. Owen Barney began strumming a guitar at the age of seven and found influence and inspiration in superstars such as Eric Church, Jason Aldean, and Steve Earle. He began performing shows and honing his skills on stage in his early teens, and he’s come a long way since then.
Career
Owen made a big impression on us in 2019 with his EP Home, and we got to see him live at a showcase in Toronto, the CMAOntario festival in Ottawa, and again on the Front Porch Stage at the Boots & Hearts Music Festival. Each time, we saw a young man who belonged on stage. His youth is prime fuel for honing his performing and singing abilities, converting fans who have a lot to look forward to as he progresses in his career.
Owen Barney’s debut EP Home introduces him to the world of country music. Barney, who was born and raised in Toronto, began playing guitar at the age of seven and began performing live shows at the age of fourteen. He’s now ready to make his mark as one of Canada’s country music stars to watch. The EP’s final track, “Letting Go,” became a viral hit on Spotify, garnering over 1.3 million streams and ranking 13 on their Global Viral Chart.
Home is a three-track EP that provides just enough of Barney to fall in love with his sound and voice. The title track is a sweet, down-to-earth love song. In a press release, Barney says of the song, “Whether it was during the writing process or every time I perform it, ‘Home’ is a song that has stood out from the rest.” I first performed this song at Boots & Hearts last summer, and by the last chorus, I could hear people in the audience singing along. That experience was truly a dream come true for me, and my hope is that I can continue to connect with fans in the same way that I did that day.”
“Killing Time” has the essence of early Eric Church – a ballad that isn’t afraid of a few electric guitar licks; a relatable story about someone you can’t get off your mind despite knowing they’re with the wrong person. In the final song, “Letting Go,” Barney channels some of his influences, such as Jason Aldean and Dean Brody, to fuse soulful songwriting with easy breezy vocals. The EP’s only flaw is that it’s far too short – but he’s just getting started. Keep an eye on Owen Barney, who is making his mark on the country music scene.
