Brendan Gleeson was born to Pat and Frank Gleeson in Dublin, Ireland. He has always enjoyed learning, particularly reading ancient texts in and out of the classroom. He was a big fan of Irish playwrights like Samuel Beckett, which led to his acting in his high school play production of “Waiting for Godot” and paying close attention in his theatre studies.

After graduating 12th grade, he spent a couple of years with the Dublin Shakespeare Festival before heading to London to audition for acting schools on the advice of a director there. Soon after, he was asked to audition for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford upon Avon, where he spent two seasons on the stage. He subsequently decided, at the age of thirty-five, to audition for films in the United Kingdom and started to establish a very respectable résumé portraying a wide range of roles.

Early Life:

Pat (1925-2007) and Frank Gleeson raised Gleeson in Dublin (1918–2010). Gleeson has said that he was a keen reader as a youngster. He attended St Joseph’s CBS in Fairview, Dublin, for his secondary education and was a member of the school drama group.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Irish from University College Dublin. Following his training as an actor, he spent several years teaching Irish and English at the now-defunct Catholic Belcamp College in North County Dublin, which closed in 2004. He was working as an actor and teacher at the same time, doing semi-professional and professional productions in Dublin and the surrounding areas.

In 1991, he left the teaching profession to pursue acting full-time. Gleeson stated in a 2014 NPR interview to promote Calvary that he was molested as a child by a Christian Brother in primary school but was “in no way traumatised by the incident.”
