Actress Shahadi Wright Joseph was born in Brooklyn, New York, on Friday, April 29, 2005. Shahadi learned how to dance when she was barely two years old, having inherited the talent from her ballerina parents. At her father’s Brooklyn dance school Purelements: An Evolution in Dance, she spent her youth studying a variety of dance styles, including classical ballet, hip hop, contemporary dance, Jazz, and West African and Caribbean dance.

After that, her parents enrolled her at Brooklyn’s Lapuerta Abierta Early Learn Center, a childcare centre, where she continued her early education. She also participated actively in the cultural performing arts promotion efforts of the Brooklyn-based nonprofit Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation.

Early Life:

At the age of nine, Shahadi Wright Joseph, an East New Yorker of the fourth generation, holds the record for being the youngest performer to ever portray Young Nala in the Broadway cast of Disney’s The Lion King. In 2007, she started taking dance classes at Purelements An Evolution in Dance (A non-profit founded by her parents, Kevin A Joseph and Dina Wright Joseph and Lakai Worrell).

She pursued studies in Caribbean, West African, Modern, Hip Hop, and Classical Ballet there. She presently studies at the Trey Whitfield School in East New York, where she joined the Voices of Trey Concert Choir in 2012 and has a B+ GPA. When Shahadi is not watching a movie, she likes to crochet hats and record movies on her iPad with her sister Sundari Adia Wright Joseph. Career:

Sylvia Joseph, her paternal grandmother, emigrated from Trinidad, a small island close to Venezuela. Her granddad performed opera. Kevin Joseph, Shahadi’s father, is a skilled hip-hop dancer who established Purelements: An Evolution in Dance in 2006.

She co-founded Purelements with her mother, renowned dancer Dina Wright Joseph. Dina spent twelve years travelling around with Forces of Nature Dance Theater Company after graduating from the Martha Graham School and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. After the trip, Dina began working at Purelements as a dance instructor and programme manager. Sundari Wright Joseph, Shahadi’s older sister, also began as a dancer before switching to competitive swimming.

Shahadi made her acting debut as a theatrical performer at the age of eight when she was cast as the young Nala in the Broadway production of “The Lion King” (2014). Simba, a young lion prince who escapes his kingdom following the death of his father, Mufasa, is the main character of the play, which is based on the animated feature film of the same name from 1994 produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The main character Simba’s love interest and the lioness heroine of the story is Nala.

She appeared in another film-to-Broadway play at the age of eleven, “School of Rock,” which received a Tony Award nomination in 2016. The musical centres on Dewey Finn, an unemployed rock musician and vocalist who poses as a substitute teacher at an exclusive prep school despite having no prior teaching experience and a strong dislike of kids.
